Adding Data to a Chart
Within the Data tab of the Chart Editor screen, the Data Sources that you have been given access to will be displayed on the left-hand side.
This means that you can select any of these Data Sources to find the data objects that you want to use.
When a Data Source is expanded, or you search for an object by name, only objects that can be placed into the selected field will be displayed in the list of available objects e.g., if you select a field that can only contain Dimensions, the Data Source will only display Dimension data objects.
Firstly, click into the field that you want to add an object to.
Example
The ‘Number’ field has been selected, this is identified by the background shading and blue line on the left-hand side of the field.
Objects in data sources are categorised as follows:
Dimensions - qualitative information such as the names of Salespeople or Sales Regions | |
Measures – aggregated data such as Opportunity Count and Campaign Cost but may also refer to non-numeric data. |
When you filter a data source, by typing the object name into the ‘Type to filter’ field, the specified search criteria will be underlined in the list of matching objects.
Example
This example shows that the data source has been filtered to only show objects that contain the text employee. We can see which data source the object is in and the list of objects that match the type of data required for the selected field.
To select an object, click on it in the data source and it will be added to the selected field. The chart preview section will be updated to show the remaining objects that are suggested for the type of chart you are creating.
The objects displayed in the Chart preview area are not necessarily all required for the chart you are creating. When you’ve added the minimum required data, a preview of the chart will be displayed on the right-hand side of the screen.
Example
Data has been added to the Number field, but the Chart preview section shows that there may be other data fields that still need to be completed.
Repeat the steps listed above to add the remaining data objects. When all objects have been added, the Chart preview section will display a preview of the selected chart.
Decimal Rounding
With effect from the pi.2022-04-28 release of the dashboard, each individual point, on a chart, will be rounded and then added together to produce the total figure.
This change affects:
Data visualisations
Tooltips
Data labels
Dynamic targets
For the following:
Individual points
Total points
Cumulation
Decumulation
Percentages
in all chart types where relevant.
In addition to the above, visualisations for the scatter and bubble charts & dynamic targets will now also display rounded values.
Table Pagination
When it comes to using a Data Table chart, you may be presented with many rows of data which can sometimes be overwhelming for some users to consume and view on screen.
To overcome this, when adding your data objects to the chart, you have the option to define something we call a pagination value.
Pagination allows you to define the number of rows that will be returned to the user (on screen) on the first of several pages of data - in this case. 50 rows of data will be shown on the 1st page of data.
The remaining rows are still returned; the user can navigate to these using the arrow buttons which appear at the bottom of rows shown on screen.
N.B - When pagination has been defined, the Totals shown at the bottom of each column relates to the data that is shown on the page in view, not the Total for all of the rows of data that has been returned… useful to be aware of, if you are looking at different charts and trying to investigate why they may not match to the same value when you expect them to.
